About Guess Five

In Guess Five you guess the five-letter word in six tries, free in your browser. Type any real English word, press Enter, and each tile changes color to tell you how close you are.

A blue tile means that letter is in the word and in the right place. An orange tile means the letter is in the word but somewhere else, and a dark tile means it does not appear at all. The on-screen keyboard keeps the same colors, so you can see at a glance which letters are still worth trying.

Each guess narrows things down. A good first word uses common letters, and later rows combine what you have learned: in one of our test games CRANE showed the E in the last spot, SLOTH and PUDGY added S, H and U, and TOMBS fixed the O, which left only HOUSE.

If you get stuck, the bulb button reveals one letter. A question mark button brings back the rules at any time, and a trophy button keeps your record. Every new round is numbered, so you can keep going one word after another.

The board has six rows of five tiles. Only real English words are accepted, so random letter strings will not use up a row, and every guess has to stand on its own as a word.

Once a word is solved, a fresh round starts with the next number under the title, WORD #2, WORD #3 and so on. You can play as many rounds in a row as you like rather than waiting a day for a new puzzle.

The trophy button opens a Statistics card with your games played, win percentage, current streak and longest streak. Below it a guess distribution bar chart shows on which row you usually find the answer.

Two habits help most. Spread your first two guesses over ten different letters, so the keyboard soon shows which vowels and common consonants are in play. Then, from the third row on, only use words that fit every clue you already have: a blue letter stays where it is, an orange one moves, and dark letters stay out.

You can type on a physical keyboard or tap the letters on screen, which makes it work equally well on a computer and on a phone. No download and no sign-up are needed.

Tips for Guess Five

  • Start with a word full of common letters such as vowels plus R, S, T or N.
  • Never reuse a dark letter; the keyboard shows which ones are out.
  • An orange letter is a clue about position too: try it in a different spot next time.

No. When you solve a word the next numbered round starts right away, so you can keep playing.
